Arrowhead

I have had a few request for a tutorial of how i inlaid a brass piece into steel.here is my attempt to educate everyone with the technique i used.

Tools used are a jeweler's saw,files,hammer,anvil,wood dowels,sandpaper,safety glasses,flex shaft for drilling,and a 45 degree bearing burr.

The basic shape is cut and shapped per your favorite techique.

After the hole is cut and sanded so the edges are 90 degrees to the arrowhead,a "V" shaped channel is cut with a 45 degree bearing burr.

Next a circle of brass is cut and annealed,it should be a tight fit.I used 3/32ths inch O1 for the arrowhead and 1/8th inch brass.

This gives enough thickness on the brass to fill the "V" channel during peining.

I then peined both sides of the brass in 4 places to lock the brass circle using the concrete nail, hammere, and anvil.

Next the edge of the surface is worked with the concrete nail on both sides, alternating sides for a snug fit.

The brass is then filed flush to the steel and sanded to 200 grit.

\

If you have done a good job of peining , you will see no gaps between the brass and steel after filing and sanding.

A paper pattern of the pierce design is then glued onto the brass using a glue stick(school glue). holes are then drilled to allow the blade of the piercing saw.

Sawing is complete and the pattern will rinse off with warm water.

Edges are marked with a divider and filed. the flats are then sanded to 320 grit and the arrowhead is finished.
